Until now, we have focused on writing words that are signed with only one hand. Now let's see how easy it is to do it also when writing down words that are signed with both hands.
When writing or reading in Sign Language, and the signed movement is being performed with both hands, the Vertical Indicators will be included: upper, middle and lower, to describe the use and difference between the left and right hands; also for other grammatical indications. the reading of signs is described from the center.
Vertical indicators: they are used to classify the different words, and other grammatical indications.
I Top vertical indicator: When using two hands, it shows the distinction between the right and left hands without contact between them.
I Middle Vertical Indicator: When using both hands, indicates that the alphabetic character on the right is facing the alphabetic character on the left without touching.
I Bottom vertical indicator: when using both hands, it indicates the difference between the passive and the active hand; but there is contact between the two. Passive hand is always on the left.
Alphabetic character repetition: Sometimes alphabetic characters can be repeated:
when repeated and equal, indicates that the movement is done twice in the same place, as in Red or Pink.
When repeated and have different indicator on the top, the first indicates the contact in the palm of the hand and the second indicates the movement.
This indicator on the alphabetic character, indicates a vertical movement downwards.
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are in the middle, it indicates opposite vertical movement of the other hand.
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are to the right of the handshape, it indicates parallel vertical movement downwards with the other hand. Example:
The indicator above the alphabetic character, when signed with one hand, indicates a horizontal swipe to the right side (or to the left, if the signer is left-handed) or over the alphabetic characters that follow it.
When signed with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are in the middle, it indicates horizontal movement opposite to the other hand.
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are to the right of the handshape, it indicates parallel horizontal movement with the other hand.
When this indicator has to make contact with another alphabetic character, it will slide to the next point without jumping. Example:
This indicator on the alphabetic character, when signed with one hand, indicates two vertical movements down.
When signing with both hands it indicates, vertical movement opposite to the other hand.
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are to the right of the handshape, it indicates parallel horizontal movement with the other hand. Example:
This indicator on the alphabetic character, when signed with one hand, indicates two horizontal movements to the right side (or to the left, if the signer is left-handed).
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are in the middle, it indicates horizontal movement opposite to the other hand.
When signing with both hands and the place alphabetic characters are to the right of the handshape, it indicates parallel horizontal movement with the other hand.
Example:
This indicator on the alphabetic character indicates a half circle to the right or forward.
This indicator on the alphabetic character, indicates half circle to the left or back.
